Description

The Medical Laboratory Assistant (Band 2) will work in a team of support staff playing a crucial role in the reception and preparation of patient samples and requests, to facilitate the provision of a quality and timely diagnostic and monitoring service essential for patient care.


Division: Pathology support services / Microbiology 


Working Hours: 37.5 per week

  • Varied hours between 8am and 8pm; some services are 24/7
  • Shift-pattern / working according to a rota

Locations: Specimen Reception,  multi-site covering Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, Chelsea & Westminster NHS Foundation Trust, and The Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust


Duties

Duties include (but are not limited to) the following:

Communication and relationship skills
  • Demonstrate politeness, courtesy, and sensitivity in interactions with patients, visitors, and colleagues, ensuring a positive image of the Trust.
  • Attend to Trust staff, patients, and the public delivering samples or seeking advice, ensuring proper referral of inquiries and complaints to senior staff as needed.
  • Manage visitor access to the department with discretion, maintaining a visitor log as required.
Scientific and Technical Duties
  • Take receipt of samples for all Pathology departments, including prioritising requests for urgent work.
  • Sort samples and requests into different Pathology categories, to be ready for collection by staff from all Pathology disciplines.
  • Use laboratory equipment such as automatic pipettes, balances and centrifuges accurately and safely, and record refrigerator temperatures.
  • Prepare 24 hour urine containers by labelling and adding concentrated hydrochloric acid, observing health & safety procedures for handling acids.

Policy and Service
  • To demonstrate awareness and compliance with Trust policies and procedures such as sickness reporting, annual leave requesting, and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Be familiar with the Health and Safety policies of the Trust and the department and ensure that they are followed to maintain a safe working environment for all employees and visitors.

Essential criteria

  • Educated to GCSE in Science, English and Maths - or equivalent Science level 2.
  • Good computer skills
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Able to work flexible hours to a rota (including late shifts, weekend and bank holidays)

Desirable criteria

  • NVQ 2 in clinical laboratory support or equivalent
  • Laboratory based practical work experience
  • Good customer service skills
  • Knowledge of pathology laboratories
  • Experience of following standard operating procedures
