Description

The Trainee Nursery Assistant will work as part of a team to assist in providing a safe, secure and stimulating environment for children. You will support the staff team in creating an effective setting, assist key persons in the taking and planning of their key groups, and complete a childcare qualification at level 2 or at an equivalent standard.

Location: Feltham

Apprenticeship duration: 12 months

Hours: 

  • shift patterns between the hours of 7.30am - 6pm Monday to Friday
  • You may be required to cover at another nursery setting
  • You may be required to work extra hours due to staff shortages, this will be repaid back using time-in-lieu at a time which is suitable to the nursery

Duties

Children’s care, learning and play
• To assist the practitioners in meeting the needs of the individual children and families.
• To assist key people with the planning and assessment of their key groups.
• To assist practitioners to liaise with parents/carers daily.
• Setting up a safe and stimulating environment for children, this may include packing away
• Promote positive attitudes and behaviour at all times by providing a non-discriminatory environment which vales and respects each child and family

Health and safety
• To be responsible of reporting accidents or health and safety issues.
• To follow health and safety guidelines and adhere to the nursery policies and procedures.
• Fit and healthy and have a good standard of personal hygiene
• Carry out on going cleaning and sterilising duties within the setting, to reduce the spread of infection

Staff
• Work as part of a team that is coordinated by the manager.
• Participate in staff meetings and planning meetings and parents consultations, these will be out of nursery hours

General
• To participate in social events and fundraising events, these may be out of nursery hours
• To follow and adhere to the nursery's policies and procedures at all times

Personal development
• Regular attendance at college to ensure passing of childcare qualification
• Liaise and communicate with assessors and training agency staff
• To be committed to personal professional development

Essential criteria

  • Enthusiasm and enjoyment for working with children
  • Good verbal and written English skills
  • Honest, reliable and flexible
  • To be fit and healthy with good personal hygiene
  • Willingness to learn
  • Have an approachable nature with a friendly outlook, and positive attitude
  • To be able to work as part of a team and support fellow colleagues
  • To attend college as and when required ensuring that all written work is up to date and handed in on time. If it is found that you are not completing college work then this will affect your placement at the setting. The nursery will have regular contact with your assessor and will be updated on your progress.

Desirable criteria

  • GCSE grade C or above in maths, English and ICT
  • Experience of working with children
  • Basic knowledge about child development
  • School leaver 16-18 years old, although this may be negotiable if funding from another source becomes available

  • A permanent position with the nursery is not guaranteed at the end of your training
  • Your position is subject to a CRB/ DBS check and the receipt of suitable references
